sold! - to the highest bidder

Went to see Brigitte Berman's documentary about Hugh Hefner last night. It was disappointing.

The film itself was very long ( 2 hrs 4 mins) but it FELT extremely long. There was a lot of interesting information and a couple nice sequences but mostly the doc was a repetitive hammering which devotedly reinforced Hefs compassionate, intelligent and chivalrous qualities.

I got it - an hour would have sufficed. Clearly, this film lacked the benefit of an objective eye during its editorial process.

On a more personal critique:

Berman briefly mentions Hefs battles with his Women's Lib Critics but assigned far less time to the subject. The director seemed to edit or lead interviews with Women's Lib Activists with her own agenda which either discredited arguments or excluded large amounts of information. Gloria Steinem's infamous article was about 2 sentences out of the entire 124 mins. I can understand if Berman was trying hard not to make a typical doc on The Playboy Empire - but if so, she should have excluded the issue completely.

My problem with the way Hefner is presented in this doc isn't because he he has managed to make millions off naked unrealistic women. My problem is that he and Berman try to argue Playboy is friend - not foe to female creatures. Hugh Marston Hefner is neither - He doesn't have any genuine stance on the issue therefore he shouldn't pretend like he does. Old Hughie only gives a crap because it makes waves.

Hefner did a lot of good things for society but his arguments on contributing to Female Empowerment are weak at best.

Oh yeah and Gene Simmons is hilarious, honest, and awesome.

reclaim

Brooks Salzwedel creates some incredible mixed media pieces. His more playful/colorful works lack the finesse of his monochromatics but he certainly has a distinct visual language that would really rock the commercial world - lets hope he is approached.

deja maybe

Hand drawn animation is so amazing to me because it is life condensed.

It is hours and hours of your time and life to create motion and maybe a story and something you aren't even sure will be worth the trouble. Muscle cramps, raw eyes, tedious labor, lots of erasing, replacing, rechecking, testing, late nights, difficult mornings and lots of paper.

I used to do this, I still love it, I need to start again - therefore I will.

Don Hertzfeldt is Superman.

deja nope

The future has already happened - therefore Don Hertzfeldts new Youtube account isn't new at all - its always existed we're just traveling in one direction through time.

Saw The Black Keys in concert very unexpectedly this evening. One persons rejection ended in my gain. Its a cruel and unusual world we live in - how twisted.

Alex Varanese has one heck of a style. His entire site is committed - must take a lot of will power and vision to present such an intensely cohesive body of work.

So much respect.

LOL! I love these corny old comics. I can't help myself, I just gotta laugh either with or at their creators... how entertaining.

Check out the rest of the comic here. This guy runs a pretty great blog but only in male dimensions.

Conflicted

Yoko Furusho pumps out some amazing illustrations but something about her body of work just doesn't sit right with me.

Maybe I find it too inconsistent or I'm over the 50's manga look, or maybe I've just moved into a dark place where rainbows and pastels just don't seem to fit. It could possibly be the glass of box wine thats making me surly - in any case I can't put my finger on it and it's driving me nuts.

Clearly, it's just not my cup- but you can't deny talent, or something that evokes such feelings of frustration.

Of All Time

One of my favorite memories to visit is the time my sister took me to see a little known, indie animated feature at a tiny tiny theatre in Georgetown - long since closed.

I was in high school, and very lonely because it was the first year she went away to college. She came home for a random weekend in November, the weekend before Thanksgiving Break. She drove all the way home to take me to this flick knowing that she had to drive back just to attend three days of classes - only to return again in holiday traffic.

I didn't think Mom would let me go because I had just received poor marks on some pointless exam. Dona convinced her. It was freezing that night as we waited in line for tickets. There had been flurries earlier that day, I pretended to smoke a cigarette.

The film was weird, wonderful, and like nothing I had ever seen before. I will always remember the film this way. It will always be one of my all time favorites.

sleep apnea

Ever since I can remember - I've had a reoccurring nightmare where I'm in the depths of the ocean and can't get to the surface in time. I think I actually stop breathing in life.

Check out this video that James showed me the other day.

Content, incredible. Editing choices, unruly. Music, incorrigible.
